River Wye .
April 8th and 9th 2007
The weather was wonderful, the river low and crystal clear and when I arrived at 09:00 the first Grannom were hatching off. Small trout appeared everywhere, rising enthusiastically. The fish appreared, for the most part, to be chasing the ascending pupa. I fished happily for several hours, and caught five trout and a grayling. This was a modest return, considering the scale of the hatch of caddis. But I left the river, for a much desired glass of chilled white wine, a happy man; with many more questions than answers about the hatch and the fish.
The Monday hatch was much less impressive, and yet the fish were more willing to take my offerings. In the middle of the river in shallow water was a group of Brook Lampreys. I think they were spawning and they offered an engrossing interlude from hunting trout. The weather, the river and the fishing combined to make this Easter weekend a memorable one. (And I'm still cogitating about those trout and grannom !)
